Cultivation Methods for Cordyceps militaris

Cultivation Methods for Cordyceps militaris 1

With the continuous development of artificial cultivation technology for Cordyceps militaris, multiple cultivation methods have been developed. They can be classified by raw materials, fruiting body features, placement mode of culture containers and container types.

1. Classification by Raw Materials

  • Wheat-based Cordyceps: mainly cultivated on wheat, widely produced in northern areas.
  • Rice-based Cordyceps: mainly cultivated on rice, popular in southern regions.
  • Pupa-based Cordyceps: cultivated by infecting silkworm or tussah pupae. Limited raw material supply, high cost, difficult sterilization and high contamination risk make it hard for large-scale commercial production.

2. Classification by Fruiting Body Characteristics

Artificially cultivated Cordyceps militaris share the same biological properties. According to stroma shape, length, swelling degree and spore yield, commercial varieties fall into 3 types: pointed-head (common type), round-head (short swollen stroma type), and spore-head (spore-heavy type).

3. Classification by Container Placement

Upright / vertical placement and horizontal / lying placement on cultivation racks.

4. Classification by Cultivation Containers

Bottle Cultivation

✅ Advantages: Low contamination rate, fast mycelium running and pigmentation, uniform primordium formation, consistent fruiting body growth, good color & shape, high biological conversion rate, easy growth observation.

❌ Disadvantages: Low substrate loading per square meter, space-consuming, labor-intensive for washing, filling, inoculation and harvesting; glass jars are fragile.

Plastic Bag Cultivation

✅ Advantages: High substrate loading per unit area, greatly cut production cost, no jar storage space needed, good heat & moisture retention, simple harvesting without container cleaning.

❌ Disadvantages: Slow mycelium growth, dense primordia, uneven & lighter-colored fruiting bodies, lower conversion rate, longer cycle, risk of bag breakage during sterilization, poor light transmission. Mostly used for small-scale planting.

Pot Cultivation

A newly popular and mature cultivation method, suitable for intensive multi-layer vertical planting.

✅ Advantages: Fast & safe inoculation, easy stacking and sterilization, good air permeability with sterile ventilation ports, shorter cultivation cycle, convenient nutrient supplement and harvesting. Labor efficiency is nearly 10 times higher than bottle cultivation. Low investment and cost, biological conversion rate up to 90% with stable good quality.

❌ Disadvantages: Higher contamination risk than bottle cultivation; only semi-transparent at the bottom, leading to uneven light distribution compared with fully transparent glass bottles.

High-quality strains, proper medium, container selection and scientific management together determine the biological conversion rate of Cordyceps militaris. Growers can choose suitable containers and adopt targeted management to obtain high yield and premium quality.
