Shiitake Mushroom Fruiting Stage Diseases: Symptoms, Causes & Control Solutions

Shiitake Mushroom Fruiting Stage Diseases: Symptoms, Causes & Control Solutions 1

1. Physiological Disorders (Non-Pathogenic)

These common cultivation problems are triggered by unsuitable environments and improper operations, not bacterial or viral infections, directly damaging mushroom appearance and market value.

1.1 Lychee-like Primordia

Symptoms: Lychee-shaped conical primordia with undifferentiated cap and stipe, no commercial value.
Causes: Strain-temperature mismatch; low substrate C/N ratio (excessive nitrogen).
Solutions: Optimize substrate C/N ratio; follow strain temperature requirements; induce fruiting only after full mycelium maturation; remove abnormal primordia promptly.

1.2 Long-Stalked Mushrooms

Symptoms: Overlong stipes with tiny, underdeveloped caps.
Causes: High CO2, insufficient light, high temperature and overcrowded fruiting logs.
Solutions: Widen log spacing; improve ventilation and lighting; stabilize temperature and humidity.

1.3 Flattened Mushrooms

Symptoms: Flat, irregular, scale-free tan mushroom caps.
Causes: Premature fruiting; delayed bag removal causing extrusion deformation.
Solutions: Avoid early stimulation before suitable fruiting temperature; remove bags after 50%+ substrate color change; apply standard temperature shock treatment.

1.9 Fused Mushrooms

Symptoms: Clustered primordia grow with fused caps or stipes.
Causes: Excessive water and temperature stimulation before mycelium maturation.
Solutions: Avoid intense early-stage stimulation; thin out dense primordia in time.

1.5 Hollow & Soft Mushrooms

Symptoms: Soft, hollow stipes, small caps and dense fruiting clusters.
Causes: Aging or degraded spawn with weak mycelial vitality.
Solutions: Adopt high-vitality spawn; revitalize low-temperature preserved strains and subculture stably before use.

1.6 Fist-Shaped Mushrooms

Symptoms: Fist-like deformed mushrooms with curled caps and twisted stipes.
Causes: Uneven substrate density and over-deep inoculation holes.
Solutions: Keep uniform substrate packing; standardize inoculation hole depth and size.

1.7 Mushroom Bud Shriveling

Symptoms: Young buds turn yellow, shrivel and die in batches.
Causes: Hot-dry climate, improper high-temperature watering, overuse of pesticides and mechanical damage.
Solutions: Adjust cultivation schedule to avoid hot seasons; protect small buds and standardize watering and pesticide application.

1.8 In-Bag Mushrooms

Symptoms: Fruiting bodies grow inside bags, easily infected by Trichoderma and cause bag rot.
Causes: Excessive log turning, drastic temperature fluctuation and strong light during incubation.
Solutions: Limit log turning to 3-5 times; open bags and remove abnormal mushrooms completely once found.

2. Infectious Diseases (Pathogenic)

Caused by bacteria and viruses, these contagious diseases easily trigger large-scale rot and severe yield loss in commercial planting.

2.1 Brown Rot

Pathogen: Pseudomonas fluorescens
Damage: Outbreaks easily at 20°C in high-moisture substrate, spreading via water and tools. Infected mushrooms brown, rot and produce foul odors.
Control: Keep workshop sterile and disinfect tools regularly; remove diseased mushrooms timely; spray 72% streptomycin soluble powder to prevent re-infection.

2.2 Bacterial Blotch (Brown Spot)

Pathogen: Polymorphic tiny bacteria
Damage: Causes sunken brown spots, mushroom malformation and substrate slime with foul smell.
Control: Standardize sterilization and aseptic operation; remove diseased bodies; disinfect with 1000-fold diluted calcium hypochlorite solution.

2.3 Shiitake Viral Disease

Symptoms: Mycelial regression during growth; deformed fruiting bodies, premature cap opening, thin flesh and low yield.
Control: Use virus-free high-quality spawn; disinfect outbreak areas thoroughly; apply diluted Benomyl and Zineb solutions to block virus spread.

3. Key Takeaways

Most shiitake fruiting-stage losses result from non-standard management and delayed prevention. Stable environmental control, high-quality spawn selection, standardized operation and early disease treatment are core to high-yield, high-quality commercial cultivation.
