Micro-Oil Air Compressors for Fermentation: Limitations and Air Purification Upgrade Solutions
1. Limitations of Micro-oil Air Compressor Units for Fermentation Air Supply
a. As micro-oil models, they cannot meet the Class 0 oil-free standard. The main unit relies on lubricating oil for sealing and cooling; even after factory-standard oil-air separation, trace oil mist (0.5 ppm) remains. Edible fungus liquid fermentation theoretically mandates Class 0 oil-free air (residual oil < 0.001 mg/m³), yet micro-oil units cannot eliminate the risks of oil molecules and rancid odors at the source.
b. Trace oil mist cannot be fully removed by conventional filtration. Standard Q/P/S three-stage precision filtration only captures liquid oil droplets; gaseous oil vapors and volatile hydrocarbon odors penetrate the filter elements and enter the fermentation tank, leading to: inhibited oxygen exchange across mycelial cell membranes (resulting in small mycelial pellets and slow germination); long-term accumulation of oil vapors fostering oil-tolerant contaminants (causing batch contamination and tank dumping); and persistent oily odors in the air supply, leaving residual odors in the finished fruiting bodies and destroying their commercial value.
c. High-temperature operating conditions accelerate oil cracking. When the compressor room temperature exceeds 35°C in summer, the main unit's discharge temperature rises, causing lubricating oil to crack and generate large quantities of odorous molecules (aldehydes and sulfides). This doubles the load on downstream activated carbon deodorization filters and reduces their replacement cycle by two-thirds.
2. Mandatory Purification Upgrade Solution for Micro-oil Air Compressor Units (Remedial Measures)
If a mushroom farm currently uses this type of unit for fermentation air supply, two additional stages of enhanced treatment can be added to the standard 8-stage purification chain to compensate for the micro-oil unit's deficiencies:
a. Enhanced Pre-filtration Oil Removal: Install a high-capacity activated carbon adsorption filter (with a filling volume 1.5 times larger than standard industrial models) after the S-grade ultra-precision filter to specifically adsorb gaseous oil vapors and odors; replace the activated carbon filter element immediately if the pressure differential exceeds 0.05 MPa.
b. Upgraded deep-drying heated-purge adsorption dryer: ensures a stable dew point of ≤-40°C, eliminates the formation of sludge caused by the mixing of condensed water and oil mist in the pipelines, and prevents secondary contamination.
