Selection of Bags for Shiitake Mushroom Propagation
(1) Specifications: High-density, low-pressure polyethylene (HDPE) bags are used for shiitake mushroom cultivation. The bags are waxy, semi-transparent, flexible yet tough, and have good tensile strength. There are two types: flat-bottomed bags and folded-corner bags. Folded-corner bags are more effective than flat-bottomed bags. When filling flat-bottomed bags, ensure the corners are firmly packed; otherwise, the corners are easily damaged, and the material will be squeezed to the corners during handling and sterilization, resulting in a soft bag, poor contact between the bag wall and the material, and low survival rate. The amount of material to be filled varies depending on the substrate.
(2) Points to Note: When using a double-bag method, the inner bag should be slightly thinner, generally 0.0047 cm thick. The outer bag is generally 2 cm wider than the inner bag in folds and 0.001 cm thick. The purpose of using double bags is to replace sealing and improve the yield. For single-bag cultivation, choose tubular bags with a thickness of 0.005–0.0055 cm. Bags that are too thin are easily punctured, while those that are too thick are difficult to seal tightly after filling.
(3) Practical methods for checking the quality of tubular bags: Cut a circle from the tubular bag with a sharp blade. Those that can be evenly stretched into a large circle are of better quality. Bags that break easily indicate insufficient toughness, easy bloating, and poor quality. Fill the tubular bag with water or inflate it, tie the opening, and place it on a smooth surface. Step on it; bags that burst indicate insufficient toughness and easy bloating. Bags that do not easily become thinner or larger are excellent, while those that easily become thinner are of medium quality. The thickness of the bag can be determined based on the number of bags per kg. For example, with 15cm × 55cm bags, if there are 110 bags per kg, the bag thickness is 0.0055 cm; if there are 140 bags per kg, the bag thickness is 0.005 cm.
