Why Oyster Mushrooms Don’t Fruit
In oyster mushroom cultivation, sometimes the mushrooms don’t grow even after full colonization, or they stop growing after 1–2 flushes. Common reasons include:
1. High substrate temperature:After colonization, if the substrate stays too warm, mushrooms won’t form. This is common in autumn with low-temperature varieties.
2. Unsuitable environment:If the room temperature is outside the right range for the mushroom type, it can stop fruiting—especially in winter or during temperature changes.
3. Not enough heat during colonization:In cold weather, mycelium grows slowly. Even after a long time, if it doesn’t get enough warmth, it won’t mature properly and delays fruiting.
4. Lack of water:If the substrate dries out during colonization or fruiting, mushrooms won’t grow. Also, if the mushrooms don’t get enough water during harvest, later flushes may stop.
5. Overgrown mycelium:Too much moisture can cause the mycelium to grow too thick on the surface, blocking mushrooms from forming.
6. Pest or mold problems:Insects or competitor molds can damage the mycelium or take its nutrients, stopping mushroom growth.
7. Poor ventilation:Lack of fresh air or light can raise CO₂ levels, which prevents fruiting. This is often seen in underground farms.
